So, you’ve got a great idea for your new site. Great! Now you only need a great domain name and a web hosting plan. My advise is not to look for the perfect name. If you are going to establish your business in a competitive part of the web the best names most likely are taken a long time ago. Chances to grab a great domain name are much better if you have a small niche in a low competitive field.
I use to approach the new domain name from three rules. If you can match one of them it is great. If your new domain includes two of the rules it is almost perfect. If your domain can match all three goals you’ve nailed it!
The domain name goals with examples. The example business is a web hosting hardware supplier (a supplier that sells hard drives and equipment to web hosting companies.)
- Easy to remember. Example name: Hallelujah.com (Easy to remember but it says nothing about the business.
- Generic words that describes your business well. For example: Webhostharddrives.com. The domain name really describes what the business is about. Maybe the name is a little too long.
- Short name. Example:Drive.com. A very short name. But it says very little about the business.
A great name would be Webhostdrives.com. The name describes the business well, it is quite easy to remember and it includes generic words. It is quite long but not too long, I think. If the name you like is occupied, just mix new words. Don’t spend too many hours with choosing domain name. Time is money. If you spend all your time chasing the ultimate domain name you’ll never get any visitors. That’s for sure.
My suggestion is to search for you new name at Godaddy.com. If the suggested name is taken they present variations of the name that are available.
